ITIN APPLICATIONS MADE EASY – The Process at Weinstein For Attaining an ITIN
The IRS requires those who report to the American taxing agency to have a social security number or an ITIN (individual tax identification number). This includes people who work in America or run a businesses in America, and also spouses of American citizens, and their children if they add any tax benefits to the client. Green card holders are also required to have one of these numbers. And also any business with income derived from America or has a presence in America also must have a tax identification number. In this case, the business owner or shareholder may have to have a social security number or an ITIN so he can file his own American tax return if he is liable.
Normally, ITIN numbers are applied for with the tax return that our client sends in to America regularly on June 15th. Their first time application or the ITIN renewal application is made easier for two reasons. First, Weinstein certifies the documents you have such as your Israeli passport that would otherwise have to be sent directly to the IRS and then they hold them. And then that could take weeks or months for you to receive your Israeli passport back from them! Here at our office, we verify your documents and then you take them home. Second, because ITIN applications are sent in with your tax returns, Weinstein gives you a discounted rate if you become a new American tax client and hire us do your tax returns. Weinstein can tell you if your spouse or children are required also to have an ITIN, or if any of you are eligible for social security numbers. In many cases, you will qualify for social security benefits and your spouse may also qualify also even if she has never worked in America.
The procedure for applying for (or renewing) your ITIN is as follows: We provide an interview where you come in to Weinstein – either in Jerusalem or in Tel Aviv – and you sit with the IRS acceptance agent, our American CPA. The American CPA will help you fill out the proper forms to apply for your initial or renewal ITIN. Normally an office interview is required but in some cases a video interview may be sufficient.
Weinstein is trained to carefully inspect your documents and trusted by the taxing agency to verify the documents are true. An Israeli passport is enough, or you can provide other photo identification and a second form we will tell you. Weinstein can also help you apply for a social security number and tell if you are eligible for that one.
The IRS will send us your ITIN number about 2 months after we submit your American income tax return, and we can then make an appointment to give it to you. That is a great time to celebrate! This way you don’t have to visit the consulate, or even send your documents out of Eretz Yisrael. You just come where you have all your tax work done: to Weinstein & Co., CPAs. We can help you with your global financial structure, investing and more. If you received an ITIN renewal notice, or you are filing your American income tax return for the first time then contact Weinstein accountants to help you. Weinstein can also tell you your American tax reporting requirements without revealing anything to the American taxing agency. In some cases you may receive an unexpected refund of money from America. Keep a positive outlook.
